Effie the protaganist, had shown such a courage for living in the worst conditions of her life but she never had any hard feeling for the world, either its was her father- in-law who treated the worsen than a pig as he always blamed her for his son's death, or it was Sal and Salter who made her miserable as nightmare on Margarate when they when they employed by Jacob to look after his grandson Georgie slipting him away from he mother Effie who was bound to work as a maid on the deck asking Tom, Effie's brother to leave the place immediately.
Effie's though hadfew good friends in her as Betty the cook and the Ben the pub owner where Effie used to work before marriage and regular customer who turned as the "Ginnie" of life for Effie, Toby, the gypsy. Toby never had a good impression on the people, or may be his sharp feature made them all believe him to be a casanova.
Effie was alone with a eighteen year old son Georgie in her arms and looking for almost every corner of the world for her thirteen year old brother Tom, who was expelled from the deck. Days and week passing through she was becoming more tensed about her lost brother who was asked by her to join Toby Tapper. In the mean while she joined a fair to earn a living for her and her son. The fair was also a place where she met Frank, who made a special palce in her heart. when Toby reached the fair she was evastaded of having no news for Tom, and they had to leave together to start their expedition looking for Tom. The soon after they reached the mad Marsh House where she saw the other face of Toby where he cooked a meal and took care of Effie and her son, other then the playboy image everyone captivated.
